Apippa Custom Price Calculator: New Non Variant Flow for Stores with Lots of Variants Overview

Please note: Our app will not work with default Shopify variants, which is sometimes the reason for slow-add-to-cart. We can offer your options through our app by using a dropdown or image selector element.

This article explains how the new flow works, why it is especially helpful for high-variant catalogs, and how to enable it.

Why this matters for high-variant catalogs

Stores with a lot of products and variants often run into a few common problems:

• Variant limits become a real constraint

• Creating variants can slow down the add to cart

• One-off variants clutter the product catalog

• Deleting or cleaning up variants can break abandoned carts

The new flow removes these issues by keeping the cart tied to the parent product at all times.

How it works now (new flow, no variants)

With the new calculator flow, no new Shopify variants are created.

Instead:

• All custom pricing and selections are saved as line item properties

• The cart always uses the parent product

• There is no variant cleanup or deletion process

• This completely removes the abandoned cart issue caused by variant deletion

Key improvements:

• Faster add to cart because there is no variant creation

• No Shopify variant limits to manage

• No risk of products disappearing from abandoned carts

• Cleaner product catalog with no one-off variants

• Clear custom details shown in the cart and in Shopify admin orders

Important notes about SKUs, weight, cost, and locations

In this mode, Advanced Settings for SKU, weight, cost, and location per custom configuration are no longer required.

What to expect:

• The custom product will inherit SKU, weight, cost, and location values from the parent product

• Your order will still include the customer’s custom selections as line item properties

How to enable the new flow

New installs (after December 24, 2025) *Enabled automatically.*

Installs before December 24, 2025

1. Contact Apippa support and request the new non-variant flow
2. Once enabled, you will be prompted to approve new scopes in Shopify
3. After approval, the new flow works automatically

What changes after enabling (if you aren't a new install)

• Your calculators continue to collect the same customer inputs

• Add to cart becomes faster and more reliable for high-variant stores

• Your catalog stays clean because no new variants are generated

• Abandoned carts remain stable because nothing is deleted behind the scenes

Troubleshooting

I was prompted to approve new scopes

- That is expected for stores installed before December 24, 2025. Approve the scopes to activate the new flow.

I do not see custom details in the order

- Custom selections are stored as line item properties. If you do not see them, contact support so we can confirm that your theme's cart view and order details display line item properties properly.

We strongly recommend using the new non-variant flow to avoid abandoned cart issues and ensure the best performance, especially for stores that already manage a large number of variants.
