Variant Location & SKU Settings
Please note: Our app will not work with default Shopify variants and sometimes this is the reason for slow-add-to-cart. We can offer your options through our app by using a dropdown or image selector element.
When your calculator creates a priced item, Apippa needs to know how to represent it as a Shopify variant so the correct price and SKU reach the cart and order. This article explains the Variant Location and SKU settings.

What these settings control
- Variant Location — where and how the calculated line item is created as a Shopify variant so the custom price is honored at checkout.
- SKU settings — what SKU is attached to the calculated item, so your fulfillment, inventory, and reporting stay accurate.
Setting the SKU
- Open your calculator and go to its Settings.
- Locate the SKU option.
- Choose whether to use a fixed SKU, the product's default SKU, or a value driven by the customer's selections.
- Save and test by adding a configured item to the cart — confirm the SKU appears correctly on the order.
Why it matters
If SKUs are missing or wrong, order management, inventory counts, and packing slips can be inaccurate. Setting SKUs correctly keeps calculated orders consistent with the rest of your catalog.
For stores with many variants
If you run a store with a large number of variants, see Apippa Custom Price Calculator: New Non Variant Flow for Stores with Lots of Variants — it explains the non-variant approach that avoids Shopify's variant limits.
FAQ
- Where do I set the SKU? In the calculator's Settings, under the SKU option.
- The order shows the wrong/blank SKU. Re-check the SKU setting and test with a fresh cart.
- I have thousands of variants — what should I use? See the Non Variant Flow article.
