Multi-Currency and Shopify Markets: Why the Calculator Shows Your Base Currency
If your store sells in more than one currency, the calculator behaves differently from the rest of your product page. This article explains what your customers actually see, what they are actually charged, and what can be done about the difference.
What happens by default
The calculator displays its price in your store’s base currency, regardless of which currency the shopper is browsing in. So a store based in EUR that a Polish shopper is viewing in PLN will show the rest of the page in PLN and the calculator’s price in EUR.
The amount charged is still correct. Once the item reaches the cart, Shopify converts it and takes payment in the shopper’s currency at your Markets rate, exactly as it does for any other product. The mismatch is a display one, confined to the calculator itself — but it is confusing enough that shoppers abandon, so it is worth addressing rather than ignoring.
Converting the displayed price
There is one supported way to make the calculator display in the shopper's currency: the Nova Multi Currency Converter app, which is free on the Shopify App Store.
Installing it is not enough on its own. The calculator has to be told to read Nova’s exchange rates, and that setting is switched on per store by our team. So:
-
Install [Nova Multi Currency Converter](https://apps.shopify.com/auto-currency-switcher-1) and set up your currencies in it.
- Start a chat with us and ask for currency conversion to be enabled for your store.
- Once it is on, the calculator price converts and formats to match whichever currency the shopper has selected.
This changes the displayed figure only. The amount charged is unaffected, because Shopify was already handling that correctly.
Other currency apps are not supported
The calculator reads exchange rates from Nova specifically. Other multi-currency apps — including ones that work perfectly well elsewhere on your storefront — will convert the rest of the page and leave the calculator in your base currency. If you are already using a different currency app, you would need to run Nova alongside it or in place of it.
If a currency app has been recommended to you that is not Nova, please check with us before installing it. At least one alternative has been suggested in the past and turned out not to work.
Shopify Markets
Native Shopify Markets support is not available. Markets will convert and charge correctly at checkout, but it does not drive the calculator’s displayed price, and the Nova route above is currently the only way to change that.
One important caveat for stores still on the older variant-based pricing flow: because that flow creates a Shopify variant at the calculated price, a currency conversion applied on top of an already-converted amount can produce a doubled conversion. If you sell internationally and your prices look wrong rather than merely in the wrong currency, tell us — that is a different problem from the display mismatch described here, and the fix is usually moving your store to the newer Cart Transform flow.
Still not right?
Start a chat and include your store URL, the currency your store is based in, the currency the shopper is seeing, and which currency app you have installed. Multi-currency behaviour depends on all four, and having them up front saves a round trip.
